Welcome to this site which covers all the issues you need to consider for you jet ski insurance, where to find the best jet ski insurance rates, what to look for in your jet ski insurance policy, and the questions you need to ask the insurance broker before going ahead with your personal watercraft insurance. Just like any other water based sport, there are many pitfalls for the unwary, and just like sailing or yachting, when using a jet ski you have the capacity to injure both yourself and other people on the water as the jet ski videos alongside show, so using your jet ski with no insurance is foolhardy in the extreme. Having said that, unlike a car there is no legal requirement for you to have jet ski insurance, although increasingly clubs and associations both on lakes and coastal locations are now making insurance a mandatory requirement for club membership. This is largely in response to the increasing number of accidents that are happening each year, with an increasing numbers of deaths and serious injuries as jet ski’s become ever more powerful, maneuverable and accessible to the general public, with many taking to the water with no training or practical experience.
Sadly, even those who have taken out personal watercraft insurance, find out all too late that their policy is woefully inadequate, since many people simply buy the cheapest insurance policy available, only finding out after an accident that the damage and injury is not covered, due to the various exclusion clauses which are standard within many jet ski insurance policies. So just like any other policy, it pays to read the small print, understand what is included and more importantly what is excluded, and equally important, how you propose to use your jet ski, and whether other people will be involved whilst on the water.
Naturally many of us aspire to, and indeed own our own jet ski, but for most of us the first taste of the sheer enjoyment of jet skiing, often comes during a holiday overseas. Here again insurance is a key issue, and one which is often ignored as we get out on the water for the first time, with little regard for other users, with almost no training by the rental company other than a few minutes covering the basics of throttle controls. In my own case, the first time I tried jet skiing was many years ago while on holiday in Thailand, which I can remember to this day. The sheer thrill of bouncing across the waves as speed with the spray flying was exhilarating, and with no wet suit and a warm sea, falling in was a pleasure! The thought of checking the jet ski rental insurance never crosses our minds ( and it didn’t cross mine at the time), and yet once again many holiday rentals end in disaster, with inadequate, or on occasion, no insurance cover, creating the prospect of expensive hospital bills, and specialist travel home, along with potential third party claims. At this point many ‘holiday’ jet skiers then check their travel insurance to see if they are covered, and are then upset to find that jet skiing is excluded from the policy as it is generally considered to be a dangerous sport ( much the same as for skiing). So whether you propose to take your first jet ski out on holiday, or own you own and are now looking for a jet ski insurance quote, the issue of personal watercraft insurance is never far away, and it will pay dividends to read the small print before you take yours or anyone else’s jet ski out on the water for the first time.
So let’s take a look at some of the issues surrounding personal watercraft insurance, and in particular what you need to consider when looking for the best jet ski insurance rates online and the associated small print which we all hate reading. I hope the following will help you understand the policy documents in more detail, and what you need to look out for when reading all the various clauses of your jet ski insurance quote.
